Maria T. Allocco believes in the power of healing. Based out of San Francisco, she is a writer, artist, curator and teacher.
Born to a South Korean mother and Italian father, Maria is a co-founder of the bay area’s first mixed race meditation group, and the mixed race writing and performance group Mixed Writes.
As a hybrid being, Maria's writing also takes hybrid forms. She creates literary visual works, and is a writer of flash: literary pieces less than a thousand words. Each piece Maria writes is infused with depth.
Having found meditation, yoga and writing to be clear channels to truth, Maria teaches yoga to at-risk youth, and to writers who want to access content through the body.
write to heal
Featured on KPFA and Mutiny Radio, Maria’s pieces have been performed for organizations including: SOMArts, LitQuake, The Global Arts Project, Kearny Street Workshop, Quiet Lightening, 14 Black Poppies, The Mission Arts Performance Project and The Intersection For The Arts.
An Academy of American Poets Prize recipient and Voices of Our Nation alum, her most recent publication is in the book Pariahs: Writing From Outside The Margins.
Maria performs writing with her group Mixed Writes and writes for start-ups with a soul in San Francisco.
In response to the question, ‘What are you?’
Maria designed the
‘What are you?’ card.
Maria's intention is to increase awareness of mixed race experience and to empower people of mixed backgrounds.
View the card live at Hapa-palooza in Vancouver, CA in September 2016.

Maria began her journey with yoga and meditation in 2006. She is a certified yoga teacher (200-RYT) through Yoga Tree SF, with advanced training through It’s Yoga, Kids and The Art of Yoga Project.
Maria believes that each person has the right to heal. Maria has taught yoga, mindfulness and meditation to elementary school youth, art therapy and creative writing to ‘at-risk’ high schoolers, and designed a program of free yoga and arts classes serving over 250 low-income San Francisco residents a week.
Maria currently teaches yin yoga to ‘at-risk’ youth through RISE Yoga For Youth, and assists at Yoga on The Labyrinth in San Francisco’s iconic Grace Cathedral.
Her classes are yin in nature, often incorporating additional healing modalities, including: Jin Shin Jyutsu, pranayama, aromatherapy, meditation and the creative arts. Maria is also a certified Reiki I healer, and Vipassana meditator. She feels blessed to have learned from master yoga teachers Abby Tucker, Stacey Rosenberg, and Darren Main.
Maria also conducts workshops to help free content through the body, infusing yoga poses and creative prompts.
